Firstly
Think of the sound you wish to create. It helps to hum it first until you matched the note. If it is a string of notes, you may have to think about how you want to close the gap on those notes. If you already know the names to these techniques, you probably have at least a little bit of a headstart. The main sound from the humming (if you can’t really “hit” that note, I recommend autotune programs, free vocal ear training apps, and a tuner app for your voice.)
Secondly
Think of the quality of your voice and how it will have to interpret that sound. We may not need to match the inflections of the sound to a tee. The main goal here is that you will have to use your vocal chords like a jump into the air. This will lift your voice off the ground. You don’t stay in flight without air, remember? We work with air to vibrate out a sound. This is why I recommended that you think first of the sound you wish to create, so you have a model to compare it to.
Thirdly
Hit the fundamentals. Is each note accurate? Am I imagining any parts here, or is it translatable and specific? Essentially, create a mental map or even sheet music. Knowing exactly what we are aiming at is essential. To take a break and admire how flexible the sound of your voice, think of how you talk? Like, actually. For real. When you really think about it? It would be jarring to hear anybody but a twin with the same exact voice as you. You wouldn’t be able to tell your voices apart in your head! Yet, we try to match other people’s voices with spot-on impressions and exuberant mastery of the voice. Well, that is the branch of music we are engaging with, and thus we can strive towards “exuberant mastery”, if that makes sense.
Fourthly
Hear your voice and synchronize with the sound you are matching. If this is only in your head, it may be difficult. Hey, that’s why I recommend writing out personal notes for how and what you want to sing like. It’s like painting the walls before you add the furniture, cause it can save another day’s work. We can forget too.
Fifth and lastly
Ask your trusted vocal coach for guidance. The better the coach, the better the message of how you need to improve that sound will translate. It may even come naturally after that lesson.
